A shopper reaches the payment step, something goes wrong and the cart sits there. If the next message reads like the generic "you forgot something", it misses what just happened. The customer may have wanted to buy. A different message, with a different tone, fits that situation better.
A payment problem is not a change of mind
When a payment step fails, the shopper has usually shown intent. The reason may be a bank prompt, a timeout or a mistyped detail, and the store may not know which. The message should acknowledge that the payment did not go through, without claiming to know why. The first cart-message article covers the general reminder. This case needs its own wording.

Offer a safe way back, never a request for card details
The retry should go through the store's own checkout. Never ask a customer to send payment details in chat. Give a link back to the saved cart and say a person can help if it fails again. Keep the message calm and short. If the store offers other payment methods, mention them only if they are actually available for that cart.
Check that the cart still reflects current stock and price before sending a link that implies it is unchanged. The shipping-fee article covers another point where a cart can stall for a specific reason.
Route the reply to someone who can help
If the customer replies that the payment failed twice, a person needs to look. They may need to check the order, suggest another method or escalate with the payment provider. The article on when reminders should stop applies too: a customer who has said they are done should not receive more.

Saanvi Studio: acknowledge, retry, escalate
In this fictional example, Priya's payment fails at Saanvi Studio. The store sends one message saying the payment did not go through, with a link back to her saved cart. She replies that it failed again. A team member reads the cart, suggests another available method and stays in the same conversation until she completes or declines.
What Hextor builds for the payment step
Hextor builds Shopify cart recovery flows that follow up after a store-chosen delay, in the store's voice, with the items still in the cart. Questions go to an AI agent using live product and order data, with a person taking over when it is unsure. During the audit, you can decide how payment-failure carts are treated differently and who handles repeat failures. It does not process payments and promises no recovery results.
Tap the "Ask anything" WhatsApp button and tell us where your team gets stuck. Start with a free 30-minute audit to discuss what the flow would need to handle in your Shopify store.
